John Cook's method in preparation for his paintings included first sketching or photographing the subject material on site.

This John Cook archive comprises approximately 500 sketches, drawings and watercolours of Halifax, the South Shore, Petite Riviere, Hants County, the Annapolis Valley, Colchester and includes Halifax buildings, homes and street scenes, country homes & farms, boats at sea & moored at wharves, fishing villages, etc. It covers the period April 1952 through 1980, many signed, dated and identified to working location. Also included are four sketch books, Christmas cards, etc.

There is also an interesting selection of black & white photographs showing Mr. Cook painting, on location at shows, i.e. at the Ten Mile House with other artists such as Alan Wylie, along with photographs taken of subject material for his paintings and the paintings themselves.
Included in the lot are Mr. Cook's Nova Scotia College of Art certificates (1946), many show catalogues and newspaper articles as well as ephemera. This collection represents the work of Mr. Cook throughout his forty year career.
